Classroom Update
16th – 20th Mar, 2009 : BASC March School Holiday Program
The one week break in March had come and gone! In addition to completing their school - assigned homework (the children had LOTS of homework!), our BASC children had fun with cookery at our centre during the week. We are glad to have Tang Sok Yee, last year‛s graduate joined us during the week and relating to us her Primary One experience.
Everyday, the children would be given a recipe and the ingredients. They then work in pairs to figure out the recipe and prepare the dish. They cooked Udon Soup and Chicken Pattie, made pan cakes and baked muffins, chocolate chip cookies and brownies!
These activities are fun and aim to build the children‛s independence and advance self-care capabilities. In the process, they also put their Mathematics knowledge to use i.e. measurement, approximation and proportion. It was also a hands-on way to “reading and comprehension”.
The children had fun preparing the food but not all liked eating their fruits of labour! But practice makes perfect and it showed that they are capable of handling the activities by themselves. Perhaps, they will cook you a meal on your next birthday!
The teachers had prepared art and craft activities but there was insufficient time to execute that as the children were bogged down by their homework. Well, there is the June holidays to look forward to.

14th Feb, 2009 : Valentine‛s Day
The School did not plan this “romantic” day as a school event but the teachers had different activities for their respective classes, in accordance to the children‛s development and abilities.
The Tangerines made a heart-shape book mark and the Watermelons made a card for their love ones. The Apples had a splendid breakfast! Ms. Janet laid out silk table cloth, candles and roses on the table. The ‘gentlemen‛ learned to pull out the chairs for the ‘ladies‛ and they all sat around the big table to enjoy a romantic breakfast of heart-shaped cheese sandwich, cereal and apple juice in plastic wine glasses!
