Excursion : 19th June, 2009 Forest Walk - Kent Ridge Park

Montessori Method SingaporeTo compliment the school’s May and June curriculum theme of Trees and Flowers, the children went on a Forest Walk at Kent Ridge Park on 19th Jun, 2009 (Fri) 9.00am – 11.30am.

Kent Ridge Park, at the western end of the Southern Ridges, is covered by a secondary rainforest. The school bus alighted us at the end of Pepys Road, right at the entry point of the 280m long Canopy walk which was perched near to the tree tops. The children got to experience nature and admire huge trees up front. Walking along the Canopy, the children were thrilled when they spotted squirrels, dangling caterpillar, flowers, fruits and birds. We also came across an ant hill and an iguana as we walked in the park. The Kindergarten children collected specimen of items which they were told to look out for prior to the trip and came back to school to complete their journals. The teachers were impressed with the Primary school (Student Care) children’s Botany knowledge as they could recognised and correctly name plants, trees and ferns during our walk.

At the look-out point, the children were awed by the coastal and sea view of Singapore’s West Coast, some off-shore islands and oil refineries. After the 1-hour walk, the younger children were glad to rest and have a drink under the breezy pavilion while the older children went on to take picture and explore the decommissioned military tank on display while waiting for the school bus to pick us up from the Vigilante Drive car park. It was an excellent outing – the children definitely appreciated nature better, gained real life knowledge of what they learned in class and had a good work out. We highly recommend this venue for family outings, visit the following site for site and directional detail.
