18 July 2009 : Annual Sports Day Event
It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning as the children stroll into school with their parents and other family members for the school’s annual sports day. Some parents even dressed themselves in their child’s class colour to render support. All parents were urged to sign up for parent-child events. While parents who were participating in the sports day for the first time were apprehensive about what to expect and thus signing up for only one or two events; the experienced parents were raring to go and they signed up for as many events as they possibly could.
The Kindergarten children kicked start the sports day with a magnificent flag drill which they had practiced for 5 weeks. Though young, they were serious about what they were doing and performed the mass display with precision and enthusiasm. Their zestful performance earned them thunderous applause all round. The toddlers from Tangerine class started the ball rolling by waddling off at the first whistle. Although the events and activities were age appropriate, this group of children (2 – 3 yrs) demonstrated uneven capabilities as this is the crucial year when children developed tremendously in their physical abilities. Hence some could balance themselves on the beam with ease while the others seemed to have difficulties, likewise for crawling and
tunnelling. Some children seemedscared and unsure probably because of the crowd which they were not anticipating. Nonetheless, they enjoyed the parent-child games when daddy or mummy piggy-backed them and worked together to complete the tasks.
The Apple class children were composed and focused, knowing exactly what they had to do while the Watermelon children werecompetitive. The Student Care children joined the Watermelon class, all in good fun. All the children looked forward to partner and work with their parent in the parent-child events and we are sure that parents enjoyed themselves as well. These games were designed to encourage parent-child communication and relationship as it involves trust and confidence for the child to be piggy-backed or work together under such stressed conditions. Studies have shown that parent’s involvement in a child’s school life helps to build the child’s self esteem as he will realise that his parents are interested in what he does. It is very heart warming to see the close bonds that our parents and children share.
One of the highlights of the day is the parent-teacher match. The parents’ team were made up of dads, mums and siblings. Our youngerteachers were sent in with the hope that they would do well with their youth and agility. The children were obviously on the parents’ side as some of them tried to “sabotage” the teachers’ team! The parents’ team won hands down but the teachers had a great time – a good way to release tension. Hand-made colourful prizes were presented to all the children and cameras went clickety-click.
After a whole morning of work out, no one hesitated when the buffet was announced open. Food was as usual “Sumptuous” as commented by a parent. Thank you parents for your participation and support and for making Sport Day 2009 another unforgettable event in your child’s growing up years.
