Racial Harmony day Celebration
Racial Harmony Day (种族和谐日) is celebrated annually on 21st July in Singapore to commemorate the 1964 Race Riots, which took place on 21st July 1964. Racial Harmony Day also represents a day for schools to reflect on, and celebrate Singapore's success as a racially harmonious nation and society built on a rich diversity of culture and heritage.
On 21st July, 2009 (Tuesday), most children came to school dressed in traditional costumes other than their own race’s. The classrooms were extra colourful and beautiful because of the children and their lovely costumes. In their individual classrooms, the children “modelled and paraded” in their outfits as the teachers elaborated on the name of the costumes and the race. The Kindergarten children had to prepare a short speech about the costume they were wearing and the associated traditions. The children then enjoyed music from the different culture before they settled down for lunch.
We thank all parents who contributed dishes from your tradition and home country. There were satay, congee, kueh pai tee, cream puffs, just to name a few. The school’s cook Aunty Lim prepared mee goreng and the children enjoyed it. Through this celebration, our children experienced cultural diversity through fashion and culinary extravaganza. We trust they have learned to appreciate that there are many other different races and culture other than their own. The teachers also emphasised the importance of respecting each other’s culture.
