6th Feb, 2009 : Picnic @ Marina Barrage
The School‛s first excursion in 2009 was a picnic at the Marina Barrage, Singapore‛s latest downtown icon, on 6th Feb, 2009 (Friday) 9am – 12.30pm.
Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore‛s 15th reservoir and the first across the heart of the city. Our children learned about Singapore‛s water resources and history of water management as they toured the interactive gallery. They also had a glimpse of the intricate working of the Barrage through an engineering model at the gallery. They saw what happens when rain falls and water builds up behind the barrage. We then spent some time touring the other facilities at the barrage, including walking along the bridge to view the dams and the scenic sights of the surrounding. Most children were amazed when they saw the sea! They had never seen so much water before! Our teachers took the opportunity to emphasize on water safety.
The best part of the day for the children was to be able to play at the water park. The had fun splashing water at each other, getting wet, trying to “catch” the emerging water spout and some even tried to “cut” the water spout. It was an educational experience about water in a cool and self-entertaining way. The teachers had a hard time getting them to exit the water park but finally, all were dried up, changed and settled down for a hearty picnic of sandwiches, sausages, fishballs and fruits. They sure had an enormous appetite that day!
This excursion enhanced the children‛s perception and knowledge about our environment and water, an important resource, which is in line with our school‛s January and February curriculum of “All about me” and “Families”. We recommend the Marina Barrage as a good venue for family outings.
