24th April, 2009 : Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom, Sentosa

Prior to departing the school for Sentosa, each child from the Nursery and Kindergarten Class was given a booklet containing pictures of a variety of insects. Playgroup’s children were not given these booklets as they were not age-appropriate. The children were briefed to look out for these insects during the trip and upon spotting one; they could collect a sticker from their teachers to indicate the task accomplished. This “treasure hunt” element made the trip more exciting and the children were all geared up and raring to go. Some of them were still a little apprehensive when we arrived at the Butterfly Park & Insect Kingdom in Sentosa but their friends’ eagerness rubbed off on them and soon all were busy looking out for their targets amongst the plants and exhibits.

The school was led by a Park Ranger to explore the fascinating world of butterflies and insects. The children learnt how to differentiate butterfly from moth; witness the life cycle of a butterfly; touched the intricate wings of a butterfly; saw a variety of interesting insect specimens and learnt their names; met other creatures of the jungle such as the Iguana and the colourful parrot and learnt about the importance they play in the cycle of life.

Most of the Nursery and Kindergarten children were able to identify all the insects in their booklet and felt a sense of achievement. When it was time to leave, the children reluctantly bid goodbye to the Rangers, butterflies and insects.
